Horseshoe Lounge

This is a shot of the Horseshoe Lounge, the last of the nightspots on Hastings Street before it was torn down to make way for new development in the Ford Field area of downtown Detroit. I took this photo about seven years ago. Hastings Street was one of the main drags of the city's storied Black Bottom, the center of African-American social and economic activity through a large part of the 20th Century. Most Detroiters believe the area got its name from its central role in the life of black Detroit. Actually, French farmers who first settled the area gave it this name because the top soil was sandy, and the bottom soil was black.
